What it's costing you

A running toilet isn't just annoying. It's expensive.

Most homeowners ignore a running toilet for 3 to 7 months before they finally do something about it. By then the water bill has paid for the fix twenty times over. The average plumber visit to diagnose it runs $150 to $250 before parts.

This guide pays for itself in roughly nine days of stopped water waste. Or about a third of a single service call.

What's inside

30 pages. No filler. Every paragraph either teaches a step or prevents a mistake.

Most plumbing content online is 90% padding and 10% actual fix. We built this the opposite way.

§ 01 — 03

The setup

Welcome, the real cost of ignoring it, and how a toilet actually works in 60 seconds. The mental model you need before the rest of the guide makes sense.

§ 05

The four fixes (step-by-step)

Flapper replacement (60% of cases). Float adjustment. Fill valve replacement (25% of cases). Flush valve seat. Every step photographed. Every common mistake flagged before you make it.

§ 06

Dual-flush & tower toilets

How they're different, what to watch for, and an honest "this guide doesn't cover those, here's your refund" note if that's what you have.

§ 07

When to actually call a pro

The five symptoms that mean stop, don't DIY this. What a fair quote for each one looks like in 2026. So you know if you're being upsold when you do call.

§ 08 — 09

Prevention + the parts we use

How to make a flapper last 7+ years instead of 2-3. The specific parts we install on service calls (Korky, Fluidmaster, brand names, model numbers). No affiliate kickbacks. No tracking links.

+

Updates included

Parts brands change. Prices shift. The parts appendix is date-stamped and updated. Every buyer gets the new version free, forever.

Who this is for

If you've ever said one of these things, this guide was written for you.

"They charged me $1,000 for a $14 part."

You don't want to be the person who didn't know better next time. The diagnosis section teaches you what's actually wrong so you can't be lied to.

"I'd DIY it but I don't want to make it worse."

The guide is built for total novices. No prior experience. No special tools beyond what's already in your kitchen drawer. Every common mistake is flagged before you make it.

"My plumber said I need a whole new toilet."

Section 4 will tell you in 60 seconds whether that's true or whether you need a $5 flapper. Section 7 tells you what a fair quote for a replacement actually looks like.

The brand we're building

We don't take kickbacks. We don't run a lead-gen funnel. We're not sending you to a plumber.

Plumbers Playbook exists because most plumbing content online is a funnel. It's designed to get you scared enough to book a service call. Angi takes a cut. Modernize takes a cut. The "free" diagnosis is rarely free.

We do the opposite. The whole business model is to save homeowners from getting ripped off. The parts appendix names specific brands and model numbers. Zero affiliate links. Zero tracking. Zero kickbacks. The "when to call a pro" section tells you when not to DIY and what a fair quote should look like.

Who's behind this

A licensed plumber. Not a content site.

This guide is written by a licensed plumber with backflow preventer credentials and about 15 years in the trade, split between plumbing service work and irrigation.

No name on the cover. No photo. No "as seen on" badges. The brand stays anonymous on purpose. What matters is the work, the credentials, and whether the guide actually fixes your toilet. That last one is on us. If it doesn't, we refund you.

Questions

The ones we get asked most.

What if I have a dual-flush or tower-style toilet? +

Section 6 covers the difference. What's the same, what's not, and what to watch for. The four fixes in Section 5 are written for standard flapper-and-fill-valve toilets, which is the overwhelming majority of residential installs. If you bought the guide and the brief Section 6 coverage isn't enough for your specific situation, the 7-day refund applies.

Do I need any special tools? +

For most fixes: your hands, a sponge, and a towel. The fill valve replacement (Section 5C) needs an adjustable wrench and a bucket. That's it. You don't need to shut off water at the main. You don't need a plumber's snake. You don't need anything you can't buy at the same hardware store you'll get the parts from.

Why $19 launch weekend instead of just $27? +

Launch weekend is the cheapest time to buy. The $8 off is a thank-you for showing up early. If you change your mind within 7 days of buying, you get a full refund.

Are there really no affiliate links? +

Really. The parts appendix names specific brands and model numbers (Korky 2001, Fluidmaster 400A, things we actually install on service calls) but there are zero affiliate links, zero tracking pixels, zero manufacturer deals. You buy the parts wherever's cheapest. That's the brand. If that ever changes in a future version, it'll be disclosed at the top of the appendix and you'll know exactly when you're being marketed to.

What if I'm not handy at all? +

The guide is written for people who've never picked up a wrench. Section 1 tells you what you don't need (experience, special tools, shutting off water at the main). Section 3 explains how a toilet actually works in 60 seconds. Most homeowners have never been shown this, and that's the part the rest of the fix depends on. If after reading you decide you'd rather call a pro after all, Section 7 tells you what a fair quote should look like.
